Peter Harrison

Science. Comedy. Magic. My mission is to help people learn and laugh.

My primary academic interests include the evolution of development, gene co-option, convergent evolution, and issues of deep homology.

Science doesn’t have to be boring. My mission is to help people learn and laugh. I’m an evo-devo PhD student spending much of my time communicating science through public-speaking, stand-up comedy, and writing. I speak across the UK at events including the country's biggest science (and arts) festivals and specific events such as Skeptics in the Pub, Bright Club, Science Showoff, the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, and TEDx. I was the Volunteer Coordinator for the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.

My writing and editing experience consists of maintaining several of my own blogs while writing and editing for others (e.g. Buzzfeed, Us vs th3m, Glipho Ltd). I pride myself on my ability to tailor my science communication to the target audience. I also write, edit, and publish non-science material, primarily within the magic/mentalism industry.

I'm fascinated by the use the internet as a creative tool to engage with people and bring real science to anyone interested. I run many Twitter accounts that share science seriously or through comedy. @ReptileFacts provides scientifically accurate facts about reptiles and has over one thousand followers. Poking a bit of fun at the use of sensationalist headlines, my @NS_headlines account automatically generates “New Scientist”-style headlines and has approximately one thousand followers. In order to help Twitter users visualise how much information is contained within a genome, I’ve been tweeting entire genomes. The HIV virus (@GenomeTweetHIV) was the first genome ever tweeted. Next was E. coli (@GenomeTweet) then yeast (@GenomeFungi). Fruit fly, nematode and human genomes are already under way. I frequently experiment with novel approaches to communicating science.
